The History of Nickelodeon
Nickelodeon was founded on December 1, 1977 as an American pay television channel. It was originally founded by American cable TV provider, Turner Broadcasting System (CNN's parent company) as a competitor to subscription-based premium channels such as HBO. The channel was originally launched as Pinwheel, and aired programming aimed at children aged 7–15. It was relaunched as Nickelodeon on April 1, 1979, and became the first ever cable channel to exclusively air children's programming.
The channel's lineup initially consisted of educational shows, reruns of popular network sitcoms, and game shows. By 1985, Nickelodeon began to produce its own original programming, which included the popular game show Double Dare and the animated series Rugrats. By the early 1990s, Nickelodeon became one of the most popular cable channels in the United States, due in large part to its flagship show SpongeBob SquarePants.
Today, Nickelodeon is available in over 90 million households in the US and is seen in over 160 countries. It continues to produce popular original programming, such as The Loud House and Henry Danger, and is also home to a number of acquired series, such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Paw Patrol. Nickelodeon is a subsidiary of Viacom Media Networks, which is itself a part of the larger media conglomerate, Viacom.
The Popularity of Nickelodeon
As the saying goes, "old is gold." And Nickelodeon is living proof of that.
Despite being around for over three decades now, Nickelodeon is still as popular as ever – maybe even more so. According to a study by Piper Jaffray, Nickelodeon is the most-watched cable network among kids aged 2-11. And it’s not just kids – even adults have a soft spot for the network, with many of them tuning in to watch their favorite shows from when they were younger.
There are plenty of reasons why Nickelodeon is so popular. For one, it’s always been good at creating relatable, relatable content for kids. Shows like "SpongeBob SquarePants," "iCarly," and "The Fairly OddParents" have resonated with kids (and adults) for years.
But beyond just creating good content, Nickelodeon has also been a pioneer in the world of children’s entertainment.
